What it takes to become a Board-Certified Veterinary Specialist
SAVSEC specialists must have extensive post-graduate training and experience sanctioned by the American Veterinary Medical Association. They must also pass a credential review and examinations set by the given specialty organization.
These requirements include all of the following:
- One year post-graduate internship or equivalent private practice experience.
- Two to three year residency under the supervision of board-certified specialists.
- Specialty specific research, publication and case report requirements.
- Successful completion or oral, written and practical examinations.

Our emergency doctor will complete an assessment of your pet and give options for treatment at SAVSEC. Alternatively, ongoing care at your veterinarian or at home may be recommended.
